Round like a circle in a spiral, like a wheel within a wheel Never ending or beginning on an ever spinning reel Like a snowball down a mountain, or a carnival balloon Like a carousel that's turning running rings around the moon Like a clock whose hands are sweeping past the minutes of its face And the world is like an apple whirling silently in space Like the circles that you find in the windmills of your mind! Like a tunnel that you follow to a tunnel of its own Down a hollow to a cavern where the sun has never shone Like a door that keeps revolving in a half forgotten dream Or the ripples from a pebble someone tosses in a stream Like a clock whose hands are sweeping past the minutes of its face And the world is like an apple whirling silently in space Like the circles that you find in the windmills of your mind! Keys that jingle in your pocket, words that jangle in your head Why did summer go so quickly, was it something that you said? Lovers walking along a shore and leave their footprints in the sand Is the sound of distant drumming just the fingers of your hand? Pictures hanging in a hallway and the fragment of a song Half remembered names and faces, but to whom do they belong? When you knew that it was over you were suddenly aware That the autumn leaves were turning to the color of her hair! Like a circle in a spiral, like a wheel within a wheel Never ending or beginning on an ever spinning reel As the images unwind, like the circles that you find In the windmills of your mind!

When you wish upon a star Makes no difference who you are Anything your heart desires Will come to you If your heart is in your dream No request is too extreme When you wish upon a star As dreamers do Fate is kind She brings to those who love The sweet fulfillment of Their secret longing Like a bolt out of the blue Fate steps in and sees you through When you wish upon a star Your dreams come true

See her how she flies Golden sails across the sky Close enough to touch But careful if you try Though she looks as warm as gold The moon's a harsh mistress The moon can be so cold Once the sun did shine Lord, it felt so fine The moon a phantom rose Through the mountains and the pines And then the darkness fell And the moon's a harsh mistress It's so hard to love her well I fell out of her eyes I fell out of her heart I fell down on my face Yes, I did, and I, I tripped and I missed my star God, I fell and I fell alone, I fell alone And the moon's a harsh mistress And the sky is made of stone The moon's a harsh mistress She's hard to call your own

about

"This is a beautiful recording by four fine musicians deeply sensitive to lyrics, and to music-making generally. From the first track, the traditional "Shenandoah" which begins with the haunting solo voice of Petra Haden, it is clear that something special will follow. And it does through an uncommonly creative approach to the music… This is a recording that will stand the test of time, and indeed, given the musical inventiveness with such repertoire, should be a model for others to follow.” Tony Gould AM

In 2017 I was invited by Brian Ritchie to direct a project for the 2018 MONAFOMA Festival in Hobart, Tasmania with Petra Haden and a large ensemble of outstanding musicians. The central theme of the project was to pay homage to Petra’s father, Charlie, who has profoundly influenced the careers of so many musicians worldwide. The sense of connection that I felt with Petra’s music making was immediate and it soon became clear that we both shared a passion for taking great musical risks.
It was during this time that the seeds of a potential recording project that would feature her with my trio began to form. Having performed and recorded with Colin and Niko regularly for nearly 20 years, I knew instinctively that the four of us would shine in that place where there are no preconceptions or set arrangements, where we could just let our ears and mutual trust allow things to unfold in real time.
In 2019 we finally had the opportunity to record at Niko’s Pughouse Studios and this album is the result. Our time at Pughouse was filled with joy, sharing, friendship and support for each other and I hope that this spirit is reflected in the music.
The title of the album is taken from the lyrics of the Joni Mitchell tune “Woodstock”.
For the session I selected tunes that each of us had played before, in different contexts, that would enable free-flowing, conversational music to develop and in turn allow each performer to contribute in a truly personal sense. There was minimal discussion before each take and what you hear on the album is as we heard it on the day. It was important for me to not make this a ‘bass album’, especially given that I am a bassist. I really wanted the music to flow naturally and allow each of us to serve the music, rather than impose an agenda on the recording. I hope you enjoy it.
